GUWAHATI: The death toll from the floods in Assam rose to 29 after two more deaths, including a child, were reported in Barpeta and Bajali districts on Saturday.
According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) the number of people affected from floods decreased from 3.9 lakh to 2.6 lakh in the last 24 hours. ASDMA reported that over 93,000 people, including 27,259 children, are currently staying in 228 relief camps and relief distribution centers across the state.
This is a decrease from the 245 such facilities that were housing more than 1.8 lakh displaced people on Friday. According to the ASDMA bulletin, the Kopili and Kushiyara rivers continue to flow above the danger level at Dharamtul and Karimganj, respectively.
The meteorological department has predicted widespread light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura during the next five days.
