Sarbananda Sonowal reviews worsening flood situation in Dibrugarh
DIBRUGARH: As the Brahmaputra surged past the danger mark in Dibrugarh on Sunday, Union minister Sarbananda Sonowal reviewed the escalating flood situation in the district and the waterlogging issue in Dibrugarh town.
With the relentless downpour exacerbating the crisis, Sonowal urged swift action and emergency measures to mitigate the impact of the flood on the local populace.
The floodwaters have inundated vast swathes of the district over the past few days, disrupting normal life and posing a threat to the safety of the residents. Numerous areas of the district have been severely affected by the inundation.
Sonowal held detailed discussions on the ground realities with Dibrugarh MLA Prasanta Phukan, district commissioner Bikram Kairi and key officials from the Dibrugarh Municipality Corporation (DMC), including mayor Saikat Patra, deputy mayor Ujjal Phukon, ward councillors and officials of the water resources department.
“The grim flood scenario within several areas of the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency demands urgent attention. Anticipating further rainfall, it is imperative that we intensify our efforts to implement emergency measures and deliver relief to those in need. The widespread waterlogging in Dibrugarh town is a pressing issue that has garnered our collective concern. Today, we engaged in an urgent deliberation with key officials to discuss the strategies in place to alleviate the waterlogging situation in the town. While the administration is swiftly deploying emergency measures to mitigate the impact, I have instructed the officials to prioritise the provision of support and relief to the affected individuals at the earliest,” Sonowal, Union minister of ports, shipping and waterways, said in a statement.
Meanwhile in Dibrugarh, the Brahmaputra was flowing at 105.79 metres at 6pm on Sunday against the danger level of 105.70 metres.
