HYDERABAD: Some tech-savvy doctors in the city have started using advanced artificial intelligence (AI) tools for diagnosis, while others are working with data sets to develop future AI solutions.
On the eve of Doctor’s Day, some of them shared their insights and many opined that though full-fledged AI tools were still to be employed in all arenas, employing technologies would minimize time in reviewing reports and planning surgeries well.

Dr Manas Pangigrahi, chief, neurosurgery department, KIMS Hospital: “We are currently using a new gadget that is useful for performing brain surgery. After acquiring a CT scan, the device creates a 3D digital duplicate of the patient’s brain, a digital brain. And, this allows surgeons to provide accurate locations of the brain tumour and adjacent structures, allowing precise surgical planning and execution, which improves patient safety and surgical outcomes,” he stated. “We have successfully performed them, and they constitute a paradigm shift in brain surgery,” Dr Pangigarhi added.
Dr C Mallikharjuna, managing director, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology, Hyderabad, and an AI enthusiast, believes that the medical industry would alter in the next five to ten years. “We are currently working on providing data to robots we are already using, and later these will come up with more accuracy and better interventions. A radiologist in his/her lifetime will assess up to 20,000 reports, but in AI, all this data is taken and assimilated to come up with more accurate and speedy analysis,” he remarked.
Dr Balaraju Naidu, chief robotic orthopaedic surgeon, ONUS hospitals, said “In orthopaedics, AI plays a major role. We have been using the technique in making right decisions in surgeries.”
