HYDERABAD: The wait for remission of eligible convicted prisoners in Telangana is finally over as the governor has given his consent to the state govt to release 231 prisoners.
Following the decision, the home department started the process to issue a GO. "As one last step, we are re-verifying the details of the prisoners, who will be released. Once the exercise is done, the order will be issued either late on Monday night or Tuesday morning," a senior official from the home department told TOI.

The previous BRS govt started the initiative during its tenure but had to stall the move after then governor sought clarifications.
After Congress govt took over power, the process was re-initiated by sending a fresh request to the governor. Out of the convicts, who are lodged in various prisons in Telangana, a govt-appointed committee, which includes home secretary Jitender and DG (prisons), cleared 231 prisoners eligible for remission, while declaring nine convicts ineligible.
The file was forwarded to the office of governor in Jan, which was cleared on Monday, sources in the know of the initiative said.
