District records 34% rain deficit
Kochi: Despite receiving good rain in the past week, Ernakulam recorded 34% rainfall deficit in rain June. As per records normal rainfall of Ernakulam in June is 724.9mm. However, the district received only 479.5mm rain in the past month.
Ernakulam is only third in rainfall deficit with Idukki and Wayanad recording a deficit of 36% in June.
In the past week alone, between June 20 and 26, Ernakulam received 186.1mm rainfall against the normal of 160.8mm.
Though it was 16% excess rainfall, data says it falls within the ambit of normal.
Rural areas of the district witnessed widespread damage in the rain accompanied by strong winds in June. Rain fury wreaked havoc in Ernakulam on June 24. An elderly person was killed after a tree uprooted over a car at Kothamangalam. Chengamanad village area witnessed whirlwind leading damage to houses from tree fall incidents.
Whereas in coastal areas residents faced nature’s fury due to sea surge. The most affected area was Edavanakkad panchayat.
