Kochi: Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council (KCBC) commission for social harmony and vigilance said in a statement on Monday that political tactics which aim at creating rifts among Christians were condemnable.
Attempts by certain political leaders to find footing in Kerala by trying to establish that there is discord within the Christian community in Kerala are deplorable, said the statement.
As part of such strategies, some are overtly and covertly spreading propaganda that church leadership and believers are on different levels. The remarks by
BJP state president K Surendran at a recent BJP state office-bearers’ meeting are some examples, the statement added.
Surendran had claimed that “believers voted for BJP, ignoring the words of religious leaders”.
Surendran’s call to always extend a welcoming hand to Christian believers for greater electoral gains in upcoming elections is also not suitable in a democratic country, it added.
“BJP state president’s public call for more consideration for Christian believers is unhealthy and needs correction,” the statement said.
