KOCHI: Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds lashed several parts of the state on Wednesday, causing widespread damage to houses and crops, sea incursions and uprooting trees. A 13-year-old boy, Fayaz Ali of Arattuvazhi in Alappuzha, died after a wall collapsed and fell on him. The heavy rainfall activity will continue for the next three days, IMD said.
The meteorological department issued an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Ernakulam.

Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod. District administrations have declared a holiday for educational institutions in Ernakulam, Kottayam, Idukki, Wayanad, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha on Thursday.
On Wednesday, shutters of various dams were lifted after water levels rose. Those residing near Periyar, Chalakkudy, Thodupuzha and Muvattupuzha rivers have been advised caution. Sea incursions were reported in Thrissur and Ernakulam.
The Central Water Commission has issued an orange alert at Madamon (Pamba River) and Kallooppara (Manimala river) stations in Pathanamthitta following a rise in water levels. Besides a restriction on night travel, quarrying, mining and tourism have been banned in hilly areas of Idukki until further notice.

NDRF team visits Munnar areas
The National Disaster Response Force team, deployed in Idukki, visited various areas of Munnar and held discussions with revenue officials on landslide threats. Three relief camps have been opened in Idukki.
According to IMD, a trough at mean sea level running off Maharashtra-central Kerala coasts and cyclonic circulations over west central adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal tilting southwestwards and central Gujarat and neighbourhood tilting southwards are influencing the rainfall activity.

Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services has issued high wave alert and swell surge watch for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Kannur, Kasaragod, Kollam, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur. Fishermen have been advised against venturing into the sea.
