Solapur police lodge murder case under new legal system

Kolhapur: A murder in Solapur in the early hours of Monday was registered under Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS).
Earlier, as per Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 302 would have come into effect, now as per BNS, section 103 (1) of the BNS would be applicable. A youth, named Vinayak Hake, was murdered on an open ground in Kalyanagar in old parts of Solapur city. He hailed from Mohol town and had come to visit his grandmother a couple of days ago. He was hit on his head using a stone. A case has been registered at Vijapur Naka Police Station.
M Rajkumar, commissioner of police, told TOI, “As per Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, which has replaced Criminal Procedure Code 1973, we have carried out forensic investigation and videography as well.”
BNSS mandates forensic investigation for offences punishable with seven years of imprisonment or more. Forensic experts visit crime scenes to collect forensic evidence and record the process.
In Sangli city, two cases have been registered under section 118 (1) of BNS 2023 for beating the victim with wood. Earlier, it invited section 324 of IPC. The punishment is the same — three years.
In Satara district, three cases were registered, of which two were non-cognizable offences - abuse, threats at Wai and Lonand Police Station.
