DIBRUGARH: A 28-year-old man was lynched by a mob on suspicion of stealing a mobile phone in Sivasagar town on Monday morning.
The deceased has been identified as Palu Gowala. The cellphone was reported stolen from the house of one Jayram Gowala in Phukan Nagar the previous night.
At around 6am on Monday, Jayram, with the help of locals, dragged Palu and his relative Dadu Gowala, who reside in the same locality, from their houses, suspecting them of being involved in the theft.
The mob severely beat both men, resulting in critical injuries.
Police rushed the duo to Sivasagar Civil Hospital where Palu was pronounced dead by doctors upon arrival. Dadu was transferred to Assam Medical College and Hospital in Dibrugarh due to the severity of his injuries.
Providing an account of the incident, Jonali Urang, the elder sister of Palu, said, "My brother was dragged from home and lynched by a mob solely on the basis of suspicion. The brutal lynching cannot be justified under any circumstances. His death has left our family shattered. We want the perpetrators to be brought to justice."
The stolen mobile phone is yet to be recovered. Police said they are gathering statements from witnesses and analysing all available evidence to identify those involved in the crime.
