KOLKATA: The management of Lycee, an English-medium school on Hindustan Road, on Friday decided to shut the institute for an indefinite period, prompting guardians to stage an agitation and gherao the Gariahat police station.
The principal wrote to the Kolkata district inspector’s office, asking for reallocating of students. In the evening, a meeting was held with govt officials and the parents were given a list of English-medium state-board-affiliated schools, where the students could be shifted.
A source said the school was taken over by a chit fund firm, the owner of which was now in jail.
Payments to teachers had reportedly turned irregular since March ’22, leading to largescale resignations.
Around 70 kids study in classes V to XII. The worst-affected are boards students who have already registered with Madhyamik board and HS council for exams. “I don’t know where to go now. We want this issue to be resolved,” said a XI student. Biswajit Das, a parent, said, “We have paid a session fee of Rs 14,000. The school took the decision without discussing it with us. Where will our kids go in mid-session?”
