Congress stifled democracy, undermines Constitution even today, says CM Yogi Adityanath

The Congress's undemocratic actions during the Emergency in 1975, including imprisoning opposition leaders, continue to raise concerns about the party's commitment to democracy and constitutional values.
Congress stifled democracy, undermines Constitution even today, says CM Yogi Adityanath
LUCKNOW: Attacking the Congress on the 50th anniversary of the imposition of Emergency by the Indira Gandhi govt in 1975, chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said that though the Congress leadership has changed since then, the party’s character remains the same as it “continues to undermine the Constitution”.
Taking to reporters here, he said that the Congress was still blaming democratic tools like EVMs for its failures.
Recalling the days of Emergency, the CM said that the Congress made an audacious attempt to undermine the Constitution by amending the Preamble and by suspending the rights of the citizens.
The attack on the Congress comes weeks after the Lok Sabha elections, when the INDIA bloc constituents, during their campaign, had accused the BJP of planning to change the Constitution. “The Indira Gandhi govt attempted to destroy India’s democracy on June 25, 1975.
Democracy was stifled by imprisoning opposition leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Morarji Desai, Jaya Prakash Narayan and Lal Krishna Advani. Congress’s dictatorial attitude was evident immediately after Independence when, within two years of adopting the Constitution, it challenged the country’s integrity by forcibly inserting Article 370 in the Constitution,” Yogi said.
“Congress tried to weaken the pillars of democracy over the years by putting restrictions on the media. The current Congress is hypocritical as, on the one hand, its functionaries advocate for democracy but on the other, they undermine it by questioning India’s electoral system and state of democracy when they go abroad,” he said.
