Ludhiana: A 24-year-old man died after a speeding truck hit the scooter he was travelling on near Lajpat Nagar of Jodhewal on Saturday evening. The victim was riding pillion on a scooter with his friend when the accident took place. While the man died on the spot, his friend had a narrow escape.
After the accident, onlookers raised an alarm after which the driver stopped the truck.
However, he fled from the spot, leaving the truck behind. The deceased has been identified as Vasu Kumar, 24, of New Amar Nagar. Jodhewal police lodged an FIR on the statements of his father Manoj Kumar.
Manoj Kumar said that his son worked in a private firm. On Saturday evening, his son was at home when his friend, Rahul Pal, came and picked him up on his scooter. They were going towards Shivpuri area for some work. Rahul was driving the scooter while Vasu was riding pillion. When they reached the area near Lajpat Nagar, a speeding truck hit their scooter. Both Rahul and Vasu fell on the road and the truck ran Vasu over.
Witnesses said that the truck driver tried to escape but was initially stopped. The accused, who identified himself as Gurjant Singh, still managed to escape by melting into the crowd. He left his truck, PB- 13- BL- 2713, at the spot. Thereafter, people informed the police.
Head constable Gurpreet Singh, investigating officer from Jodhewal police station, said that police recorded statements of the father of the deceased and registered a case under sections 279 (Rash driving) and 304 A (Causing death by negligence) of the IPC against the accused. The truck has been confiscated and attempts are being made to trace its owner and driver.

In another case, A high-end bike rider and a woman died while her son suffered injuries after a collision between two two-wheelers near Kotla Shamspur village in Samrala area on Ludhiana Chandigarh national highway on Sunday morning.
The deceased biker has been identified as Vivek Chauhan of Sector 42B in Chandigarh and the woman as 50 years old Parminder Kaur of Hedon village. Parminder’s son Sanpreet Singh was age 24. The police have booked the deceased biker.
The deceased woman’s husband Parminder Singh said on Sunday morning his wife and son were headed towards Nagra village on Activa scooter. He said that as his son, who was riding the Activa, took a turn towards Samrala from Kotla Shamspur on the national highway, a biker coming from Samrala side at a very high speed hit their vehicle.
The complainant alleged that the accident happened due to the carelessness of the motorcyclist.
DSP Samrala Tarlochan Singh said the biker was in a group and that the others fled the spot.
The police have booked the deceased under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 304A (causing death due to negligence), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the IPC.
