Madurai: Writers and academicians at the 4th Transwoman and Transmen Literature Festival in Madurai urged increased research and writing on the experiences and contributions of transwomen and transmen. Speaking at the event organized by the Transgender Resource Centre (TRC), Deepa Nagarani, a Tamil novelist, emphasized the sparse literary representation of transwomen and transmen in India, stressing the need to document their truths through literature for future generations.
Geetha Kannan, founder of My Madurai Montessori School, highlighted the importance of integrating studies on the transgender community into school curricula .
Mahalakshmi Raghavan, a writer, launched her book ‘Transgender Demystified: 109 FAQs for Understanding’ at the event, aimed at dispelling misconceptions surrounding transgender laws, lifestyles, culture, and history.
The Transgender Resource Centre also organized a short story writing competition, awarding prizes to the top three writers. Priya Babu, TRC founder, mentioned receiving around 170 submissions, with special mention prizes for 10 stories and top awards for the best three.
