Organs of brain dead man transplanted to four
Madurai: The organs of a 37-year-old man from Madurai who was declared brain dead following a road accident were harvested and transplanted to four patients on Monday.
Selvendran, 37, of Chettiyapatti in Usilampatti taluk met with an accident on Saturday. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was shifted to Meenakshi Mission Hospital on Sunday.
Despite treatment, his condition did not improve. After necessary tests, doctors declared him brain dead in the early hours of Monday.
However, other organs, including his heart, were functioning well. The medical team explained Selvendran’s condition to his family and got consent for organ donation. Following approval from the state govt authorities, his heart, two kidneys and two corneas were harvested at the hospital. A kidney was transplanted to a patient at the same hospital and another kidney was allotted to Government Rajaji Hospital while his two corneas were taken to Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai. His heart was taken to MGM Healthcare, Chennai. Selvendran’s mortal remains were laid to rest with state honours.
