RDSO completes rolling stock trials for Mumbai metro line 3
MUMBAI: Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL) announced that the Research, Designs, and Standards Organisation (RDSO) has completed the trials for the rolling stock (train-set) that will be deployed for commercial services on Metro Line 3 (Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ).
The trials are currently underway for the Phase I stretch between Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) and Aarey.

A senior MMRCL official said, “This is a significant milestone as oscillation trials for the Metro rakes have been concluded. RDSO will now send its report of this segment of trials to the Railway Board as well as the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS).”
These trials were undertaken at a maximum speed limit of 95 km/h with both empty and loaded rakes.
Oscillation trials for metro systems test the dynamic performance and stability of the train at different speeds.
These trials, which commenced on June 8, are crucial to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the metro. The key aspects tested during these trials include determining ride comfort by evaluating the vibrations and accelerations experienced inside the train to ensure passenger comfort.
The dynamic stability is also checked to assess the train's stability to avoid derailments, particularly at high speeds and during curves. Analysis of how the train interacts with the track, including the forces exerted on the rails and the potential for rail wear or damage, is also undertaken.

During the trials, verification is done to ensure that all safety systems function correctly under various dynamic conditions, including braking and emergency response mechanisms.
These trials are essential to certify that the metro system meets all regulatory requirements and operates safely and efficiently under real-world conditions.
The official added, “Testing of other electrical systems and integrated testing of rolling stock with signaling is in progress. After completion of testing, the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) will be invited.”
RDSO performs thorough testing and assessment of metro systems and components to ensure they comply with safety standards, thus preventing accidents and ensuring passenger safety.
