Muda plans to break off sewage flow to Mysuru lakes
Mysuru: Mysuru Urban Development Authority (Muda) is working out a plan of action to stop the flow of untreated sewage directly to the lakes in Mysuru and its outskirts.
As untreated sewage enters the waterbodies, it has polluted them. CM Siddaramaiah has instructed the officials to work out a plan to ensure that the waterbodies are not polluted following the incident in K Salundi where a youth died and several residents were affected by drinking contaminated water caused by the flow of sewage to the drinking water supply in borewell .
The flow of untreated sewage into Varuna Lake on T Narasipur Road on the outskirts of the city, which also comes under the limits of the Varuna assembly segment represented by chief minister Siddaramaiah and Thippaiahanakere in police layout which comes under the purview of Zoo Authority of Karnataka, is causing foul smell.
The water in Varuna Lake was used for agriculture activities by local farmers till recent years, but now they have also stopped using this water for such activities, following the discharge of sewage water into the lake by both Muda and private layout residents residing surrounding the lake.
As residents living in the surroundings of Thippaianakere such as Sardar Vallabhbai Patel, IPS Srinivasan police layout and other private and Muda layouts on Outer Ring Road areas also urged the city urban planning authority to stop the flow of untreated water to such waterbodies, now Muda has prepared a separate action plan at a total cost of Rs 43.4 crore, not only to stop the flow of untreated sewage water but also conservation of these two waterbodies for improvement of groundwater table in surrounding areas of the lake . The action plan also covers the improvement of civic facilities in Muda layouts surrounding these waterbodies.
According to official sources, Muda has prepared an action plan of Rs 30.8 crore to prevent the flow of untreated water to Varuna Lake from its surrounding areas like Vasantha Nagar, Nadanahalli, KBL layout, Bhugathahalli, Chikkahalli, Vajamangala and other areas.
It has planned to set up a water treatment plant near Varuna Lake to process the sewage water entering the lake. Treated water will be released to Varuna Lake after processing this water as per the plan.

It also prepared another action plan to treat the polluted Thippaiahankere Lake water at a cost of Rs 12.6 crore, besides to prevent the flow of sewage water from Lalithadripura and other areas of Chamundi foothills. A two MLD capacity wastewater treatment plant and wet well will be set up to treat the Thippaiahankere water. The treated water of this lake will be released to Rayanakere Lake.
Speaking to TOI, Muda chairperson K Marigowda said that he had inspected both these lakes to stop the flow of sewage along with his commissioner GT Dineskumar and other officials. Muda has sent a proposal to the state government after preparing an action plan at the cost of Rs 43.4 crore seeking its administration and financial approval.
As CM also directed him to stop the flow of untreated water polluting the lakes in its limits, he said that he would remind CM Siddaramaiah who will be chairing the quarterly KDP meeting on June 26 at ZP Hall to give the earliest approval. “I hope CM gives nod for this works during this meeting. Muda has a revenue of Rs 400 crore which will be used to improve basic facilities in its layouts,” he said.
During Muda officials’ recent visit to Thippaiahanakere, several residents urged them to prevent the flow of untreated sewage water from entering the lake, besides preventing foul smell emanating from the waterbody, causing inconvenience to residents living in the surroundings of this lake, said Chandru, a retired police official.
