PUNE: The sweltering heat that has gripped the city and other parts of
Maharashtra may come down marginally in the coming days, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting thunderstorm and light rainfall activity from May 12 to 14 in the city.
In its national forecast on Wednesday, the IMD signalled the possibility of thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30-40kmph at isolated places across various regions, including Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada, on May 12.
Speaking to TOI, an IMD official said, “Some light rains can be expected in Pune and surrounding areas from May 12 due to a cyclonic circulation over the Northeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Gujarat region, causing moisture incursion.”
The official said thundershowers might not be heavy but could bring much-needed relief from the scorching temperatures. “Rain may drop temperatures marginally. Day temperatures have already dropped below 40°C in parts of the city due to increased moisture incursion and some clouding,” he said.
According to IMD data, the maximum temperature in Pune city on Wednesday was 39.4°C. Malegaon emerged as the hottest location, with the mercury soaring to a scorching 42.6°C, while Nashik and Aurangabad registered maximum temperatures of 39.2°C and 40.2°C, respectively.
