Drunk man poses as traffic cop after World Cup win, held
Pune: An unemployed man, who nurtured a desire to become a policeman, was arrested on the charge of impersonating a constable after he stopped, questioned and beat up some vehicle drivers during chaotic celebrations to mark India’s T20 World Cup victory at Alka talkies junction around 12.30am on Sunday.
The Vishrambaug police identified him as Sumant Kishor Parte (22) of Sadashiv Peth.
Charges under the Prohibition Act have been invoked against him.
Senior inspector Deepali Bhujbal of Vishrambaug police said, “We were manning the traffic near the Lakdi Pul at Alka Talkies chowk when some people told us that a police constable was hurling abuses at motorists and beating up a few of them. They also told us that some people were beating him up. We rushed to the spot, but by that time Parte had gone towards a private hospital in Sadashiv Peth. Our team searched for him in the area and took him to the police station.”
Bhujbal said, “By this time, a video surfaced on social media showing Parte handling a gun and beating up someone with it. We questioned him and he handed it over to us. It was an air gun. Parte was inebriated.”
The officer said, “Parte was wearing khaki trousers, a belt with a buckle number and had a baton and gun in his hand. We found a fake identity card of the Amravati police, ID of Government of Maharashtra and other incriminating documents.”
She said, “Parte hails from Roha in Raigad district. He used to work as a peon with a travel agency in Sadashiv Peth. A few months ago, it shut down and he became unemployed.”
