Pune: Maha Metro has started soil testing and basic works pertaining to pillar foundations for Pimpri to Nigdi extension covering 4.5km.
The extension was approved last year, following which Maha Metro had initiated a process to appoint agencies to execute the work. It will have four stations, ending at Bhakti Shakti Chowk, providing direct connection for commuters from Pune to the industrial area of Chinchwad and Nigdi.
The Metro trains, as of now, are operational till PCMC main building.
“Same line will be extended till Nigdi. The work of the entire route, including the viaduct, will get over by mid-2027,” a Maha Metro official said.
To save on time, the Maha Metro will begin construction of the concourse slabs and platforms at the four stations with the viaduct work.
Frequent commuters said the work should start at the earliest and get over within the deadline. “The PCMC-Nigdi section is a straight stretch. Hence, we expect the work to get over without many hurdles,” Nigdi resident Ahan Ranade said.
The officials said the works would be expedited following the completion of soil tests and other technical surveys on the entire section.
As the maximum portion of the viaduct is aligned on the median of existing old Mumbai-Pune road, Maha Metro said no major land parcels were required for the project. “Some land will be needed for the stations. The discussions will be held with Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, state govt and private landholders, as per the requirement,” another Maha Metro official said.
Soil testing begins on Swargate-Katraj section Maha Metro has also started soil testing on the proposed Swargate-Katraj underground Metro. The project is yet to receive final approval from the Union govt.
Officials from Maha Metro said soil testing could save time. Actual work would begin after approval to the project and appointment of agency to execute work, an official said.
