Rainfall situation may improve in few days: IMD officials amid minimal showers in Pune

PUNE: Heavy or even moderate rainfall continues to elude the city in spite of the ghat regions surrounding Pune receiving double-digit rainfall over the last few days.
The situation might, however, improve around mid-week, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said on Monday.

Shivajinagar got 0.7mm rainfall on Monday, while Pashan got 1.9mm. In Lavale, it rained 2.5mm on Monday, followed by Lohegaon at 1.2mm.These rainfall numbers fall far too short of the moderate rainfall category, as suggested by IMD forecasts over the last few days for the city.
The moderate showers range from 15.6mm to 64.4mm per day, according to IMD.
SD Sanap, a scientist in weather services at IMD-Pune, explained the disparity between the rainfall pattern in the ghat section and that in the city. “The ghat areas are recording higher rainfall as compared to the interior regions of Maharashtra because of the proximity of the offshore trough to the ghats and coastal areas,” Sanap said.
“As the clouds move inland, they lose much of their moisture content, resulting in reduced precipitation over interior regions,” he said.
The past few days have seen cloudy conditions or light drizzles in the Pune’s city areas. Sanap, however, indicated a potential shift in the weather pattern soon. “While we cannot expect heavy rain in the interior regions, light to moderate showers may be anticipated from July 3-4,” he said.
Rainfall data up to 05.30pm on July 1 showed the contrast between the ghat areas and the city. While Lonavla received 39.5mm rainfall during the day, urban areas like Koregaon Park just got 0.5mm. Other notable recordings included Malin (11.5mm), Nimgiri (4mm), Rajgurunagar and Talegaon (3.5mm each) and Khed (3mm).
