KRISHNAGIRI: A driver and a cleaner of a suction truck were crushed to
death after a 100-year-old banyan tree fell on the vehicle’s cabin at Kusnipalayam in Hosur on Wednesday.
The incident occurred when P Marappa, 45, was driving the truck to a house to clean the septic tank along with the cleaner, K Venkatesh. Both hail from Palayam in Hosur.
When the truck crossed Anjaneyar temple at Kusnipalayam, the banyan tree suddenly got uprooted and fell on the truck’s cabin, killing the two on the spot.
A passerby alerted the Mathigiri police, who came to the spot with the fire and rescue services personnel. They retrieved the bodies from the truck and sent them to the government hospital in Hosur for postmortem. Preliminary inquiry revealed that the banyan tree fell owing to the loosening of soil at the tree’s roots in the recent rainfall.
