Shillong:
Pilgrims who have come to attend the Ambubachi Mela, an annual religious and cultural fair that attracts visitors from various parts of the country, are making a beeline for the Pine City and the ever-popular Sohra (Cherrapunjee).
As the ancient festival of Ambubachi begins at the Kamakhya Temple situated atop Nilachal Hills in Kamrup, pilgrims from different regions of India, particularly from the eastern states and primarily from the neighboring state of Bengal, embark on a unique pilgrimage to one of the wettest places on Earth.
A pilgrim from Malda, West Bengal, expressed her joy, saying, “Amra proti bochhor Ambubachi melate eshe Cherrapunjeeteo brishti dekhte ashi (every year, when we come for Ambubachi fair, we also come to see rainfall in Cherrapunjee).”
Many visitors also take a trip to Dawki, located near the India-Bangladesh border.
A traffic police officer said all necessary security measures have been implemented to ensure the safety of tourists who visit Shillong, Cherrapunjee, Dawki and other places during this time.
Taxi drivers start their day early to accommodate the influx of tourists who flock to the cool and lush hills to escape the scorching heat of the plains during the summer season. The local economy receives a significant boost as hotels, homestays and lodges in Shillong, Sohra, and Dawki are bustling with pilgrims.
