THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In a freak accident, a 35-year-old woman — Simi of Vellar near Kovalam — was killed after she plunged onto a service road from Venpalavattom overpass on NH 66 along with her three-year-old daughter and younger sister from a two-wheeler she was riding pillion on Monday. The incident happened around 1pm.
Her sister Sini (32) was riding the Honda Activa scooter and her daughter Sivanya was on Simi’s lap.
Both of them are being treated at a nearby private hospital and their condition is reportedly stable.
They were proceeding to Kazhakootam from Kovalam on the scooter when the accident occured. Sini apparently lost control of the vehicle when they reached the overpass and the three fell onto the service road nearly 20 metres deep.
Sini might have dozed off: CopsPolice said as per initial reports, Sini could have dozed off and this caused the accident. However, they are carrying out a detailed probe by verifying footage from nearby CCTVs.
One of the initial footage showed the scooter losing balance and hitting the side wall of the overpass.
Pettah police have registered a case under Section 106 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the equivalent of Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. Simi’s body has been shifted to the morgue of Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Hospital and it will be handed over to relatives after a post-mortem examination on Tuesday.
