Gandhi market traders record views on new wholesale market
Trichy: In light of the proposal to construct a centralized wholesale vegetable market near the upcoming integrated bus terminus (IBT) at Panjappur on the Trichy–Madurai national highway, the Trichy district administration, and Trichy city corporation sought traders’ opinions on relocating from the overcrowded Gandhi market to the city’s periphery.
The decision to relocate either wholesale or retail traders from Gandhi market is still pending.
“The objective of the meeting is to elicit their viewpoints. Their opinions have been collated, and the resolution will be made based on this analysis,” Trichy collector M Pradeepkumar stated after the meeting. Corporation commissioner V Saravanan was also present.
The collector noted that traders dealing with vegetables, fruits, and flowers requested spacious shops in the upcoming market. “They have also put forth additional demands, which the district administration will consider making a judicious decision,” he said.
Street vendors around Gandhi market also submitted their demands. “We are allocating space for the street vendors in the new market; before that, we will enumerate them and allocate space accordingly,” said the collector.
The municipal administration and water supply department has allocated 256 crore for the construction of a centralized wholesale vegetable market to accommodate 860 shops at Panjappur.
The new market, proposed by Trichy corporation, will be established on 22 acres opposite the new truck terminal on the NH.
The new market will have four gates and will be designed to allow easy access for trucks to the shops.
