The credit for the establishment of Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi, goes to the vision and tireless efforts of Bharat Ratna Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, the founder of BHU. Three engineering and technical institutions were established by Malviya, which were known as Banaras Engineering College (BENCO) in 1919, College of Mining and Metallurgy (MINMET) in 1923 and College of Technology (TECHNO) in 1932. To provide a highly integrated educational base, BENCO, MINMET, TECHNO and College of Pharmaceutical Engineering and Technology, established in 1932, were merged together to form the IIT (BHU) in 1968. On June 29, 2012, by an Act of Parliament, the Institute of Technology, BHU was converted into IIT(BHU) Varanasi.
