Varanasi: Following an exchange of fire with police personnel, two looters and their accomplice were nabbed in Devgaon area of Azamgarh district late on Friday.
Sharing details of the police action, Azamgarh ASP (City) Shailendra Lal on Saturday said that on getting inputs regarding movement of the criminals, a team of devgaon police station cordoned Kabuira culvert on Lahuakala-Lalganj road after midnight and started checking vehicles.
Around 2.25am, when they tried to stop a speeding car, the miscreants tried to take an U-turn in a bid to escape.
However, the cops later managed to catch hold of one miscreant, when he tried to jump out of the car while two others tried to escape towards a field. The ASP said when the cops chased the two, they opened fire at the police team. When the cops retaliated, both suffered bullet injuries in their legs and were nabbed. Cops later rushed them to the district hospital.
Lal said the arrested miscreants were identified as Abhishek Singh alias Shivansh of Devgaon, Abhishek Singh and Somprakash singh of Jaunpur. The cops also seized two country-made revolvers, live cartridges, five mobile phones and a looted car from them. One of injured looters, Abhishek, has eight criminal cases pending against him while an order of externment was issued against him recently. The senior cop further said that the arrested trio had booked a taxi in PDDU Nagar of Chandauli on Friday wee hours to go to Gaura Badshahpur in Jaunpur. When the car was passing through Devgaon area, the trio tied the hands and legs of the driver and threw him out of the car near Kabira culvert before fleeing with the looted taxi.
