Athani is an assembly constituency in the Belagavi district of Karnataka. The constituency comprises of the Athani and Kagawad talukas.

The constituency has a total of 2,50,452 registered voters, with a significant population of Lingayats, Marathas, and Muslims.
The BJP’s Mahesh Kumathalli won the seat in 2019 bypolls with a vote margin of nearly 40,000.He had won the seat in the 2018 polls under the Congress ticket. In 2018, the BJP’s Laxman Sangappa Savadi was runner up and lost the seat by around 3,000 votes.
This year, Savadi will be fighting under the Congress ticket against the BJP’s Kumathalli.
The BJP has been successful in the constituency due to its strong support among the Lingayat community, which is a dominant caste in the area.
The Athani constituency is home to several historical and cultural landmarks. The famous Kudala Sangama temple, located in the nearby Bagalkot district, is a major pilgrimage site for the Lingayat community.
The Election Commission has announced that single-phase polls will be held in Karnataka on May 10. The results will be declared on May 13.
There are a total of 224 seats in Karnataka. It is the seventh largest legislative assembly by strength.
In the 2018 assembly polls, the state threw up a fractured mandate with BJP emerging as the single largest party with 104 seats. The Congress won 87 seats while the JD(S) won 30.
The BJP managed to form the government only after several MLAs from the ruling Congress-JD(S) coalition joined the saffron party.
The BJP faces anti-incumbency in a state where no party has won consecutive terms in over 20 years. The Congress is banking on BJP’s “incumbency burden” and is confident that the corruption charges against its opponent Basavaraj Bommai will stick.
