Debaloy Bhattacharya’s much-awaited pulp fiction film ‘Shri Swapankumar-er Badami Hyenar Kobole’ is finally gearing up for its theatrical release. A homage to the iconic Bengali pulp stories by the legendary writer Swapankumar, the thriller boasts a star-studded cast. Abir Chatterjee plays the central role of Deepak Chatterjee, a character who is a detective in Swapankumar’s novels.
Alongside him is Paran Bandyopadhyay, portraying the role of the writer Swapankumar himself, while Shruti Das fills the shoes of Tashi, and Pratik Dutta appears as Ratanlal.
Set against the backdrop of a city teetering on the brink of chaos, the narrative unfolds with an intriguing premise. An infamous international terrorist, known as Badami Hyena, is en route to the city with malevolent intentions. Enter Deepak Chatterjee, a detective who has been in seclusion for years, who is urged back into action by Swapankumar, the very writer who brought him to life in his novels. Swapankumar wishes to write one more adventure story about his creation, perhaps for the last time. Deepak teams up with Ratanlal, his reliable aide, in an adrenaline-pumping chase to thwart the villain's nefarious plans. They even manage to secure a secret container holding something crucial to Badami Hyena, only to have it disappear when Ratanlal is tragically killed.
In terms of production quality, meticulous attention has been paid to the characters' appearances. Debaloy Bhattacharya emphasizes, “Creating the looks was an integral part of our pre-production phase. We took great care in ensuring they align closely with how they are described, promising audiences a fresh visual experience.” The film is set to hit theaters in November, heightening expectations among fans.
Abir Chatterjee, who is already a household name for his portrayals of iconic detectives like Byomkesh, Feluda, and Sonada, shares his excitement about playing Deepak Chatterjee. "I am absolutely thrilled," he says, articulating the anticipation that surrounds his role. Shruti Das, who plays Tashi, talks about the uniqueness of her character, stating, “The distinctiveness of my role could only be realized through specific looks, and I've endeavored to translate the director’s vision onto the screen.”
Given Bengalis' deep-rooted affection for detective films, there's a palpable sense of excitement about how Deepak Chatterjee will resonate with the audience. Abir Chatterjee, who has flawlessly executed his sleuth roles in the detective genre, is expected to once again captivate viewers as he brings Deepak Chatterjee out of obscurity and onto the big screen.
