Killer Mike opens up about Grammy arrest with new song 'Humble Me'

Killer Mike, who recently won Album of the Year at the 2024 BET Awards, has finally spoken out about his arrest at the Grammy Awards. He addresses the incident in his new single "Humble Me," which is part of a new project serving as an epilogue to his last album, "Michael."

"Humble Me" was released the same night Mike attended the BET Awards at Peacock Theatre, near where he was arrested earlier this year.At the Grammys in February, he won in three major rap categories. However, after giving his acceptance speech, he was taken away in handcuffs. In "Humble Me," he raps about the experience, saying he won at the Grammys for his skill and representing Atlanta, but was swept up and sent to jail. He mentions that the devil often ruins things when one is doing well, but he kept his head high as he was led away in handcuffs.
Mike was charged with misdemeanor battery after an altercation with a security guard. Reflecting on his time in jail, he raps about having to quiet his mind through prayer, keeping his faith despite the lies being told, and feeling a sense of freedom after sleeping peacefully, only to wake up to the news that his son had received a kidney transplant.
Mike explained that he returned to the studio the day after his release. He mentioned feeling inspired and following the music, acknowledging that many of his heroes had also faced similar challenges. He thanked God for helping him through a difficult time, likening it to being Daniel in the lion’s den. He described coming out of jail in the pouring rain, being greeted by his wife, celebrating briefly, and then receiving the good news about his son’s kidney.
Mike's son, Pony Boy, received a kidney transplant the day after the Grammys. He appears with his father at the end of the video for "Humble Me." Mike believes that his humility and faith granted him God’s grace during this difficult time, and he considers his son's successful transplant a blessing from God.

At the Grammys, Mike won all three categories he was nominated in, including Best Rap Album for "Michael," Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Song for "Scientists & Engineers" featuring André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane. He is currently on his international Down By Law tour, accompanied by his choir, the Mighty Midnight Revival.
