PM Modi 3.0 council of ministers: LJP's Chirag Paswan takes oath as minister
NEW DELHI: Chirag Paswan, the newly elected Member of Parliament from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), an ally of the Bharatiya Janata Party, took the oath of office as a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's third term.
The son of the late former Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, Chirag Paswan has had a notable political career. Elected to the Lok Sabha in 2014, he served on various committees during his tenure, including the Standing Committee on Industry from September 2020 onwards.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Paswan emerged victorious from the Hajipur constituency.
In the 2014 elections, Chirag Paswan contested and won from the Jamui Lok Sabha seat, defeating Sudhansu Shekhar Bhaskar of the Rashtriya Janata Dal. He successfully defended his seat in the 2019 elections, overcoming his closest competitor, Bhudeo Choudhary.
Following the demise of LJP founder Ram Vilas Paswan in 2020, Chirag faced a disagreement with his uncle Pashupati Kumar Paras, resulting in the division of the LJP into two factions. Chirag leads the LJP (Ram Vilas), while Paras heads the Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party (RLJP).
In the 2024 general election, the LJP (Ram Vilas) secured five Lok Sabha seats in Bihar, with victories for Veena Devi, Arun Bharti, Shambhavi Choudhary, Rajesh Verma, and Chirag Paswan.
The Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA achieved a strong performance, securing 293 seats in the Lok Sabha elections, with the BJP alone winning 240 seats. In the 543-member lower house of the Indian parliament, a minimum of 272 seats is required for a majority.

In Bihar, the BJP-led NDA delivered impressive results, winning 29 out of the 40 seats. The BJP and JDU won 12 seats each, while the LJP (Ram Vilas) emerged victorious in all five seats it contested. The RJD and Congress secured four and three seats, respectively.
