NEW DELHI: Jayant Chaudhary, the leader of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) party, took oath as minister of state in PM Modi's third council of ministers. Chaudhary has been actively involved in politics since 2009. He is the grandson of former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh and the son of Ajit Singh, a prominent political figure in western Uttar Pradesh.
In the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections, Chaudhary formed an alliance with Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party.
The RLD contested 33 out of the 403 seats and won 8 of them. Chaudhary himself did not contest the elections but played a crucial role in the campaign.
Chaudhary joined the NDA after his grandfather Chaudhary Charan Singh was posthumously honoured with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian honour in the country, in February this year.
Chaudhary's political journey began in 2009 when he was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mathura. He has since been working to strengthen the RLD's presence in western Uttar Pradesh, focusing on issues related to farmers and rural development.
