After a two-year long hiatus brought about by the pandemic, the
Durga Puja festivities were in full swing in Bengaluru this year. The city saw a variety of pandals put up by various associations, both small and big. The culmitaion of all the festivities, however, happened at Ulsoor lake on October 5, when all the associations came together to immerse their idols in the lake.
It was, arguably, one of the biggest Durga Puja immersions in the history of Bengaluru.
According to Anupam Das of the Bhartiya Bongio Samaj, close to 135 idols were immersed in the lake. The event was supervised and coordinated by volunteers of the Samaj and those stationed by MP PC Mohan, apart from Bengaluru City Police and Bengaluru Traffic Police. The area was fitted with bio toilets and also had water and refreshments, besides an ambulance and two staff nurses available around-the-clock for emergencies. “Idols were as heavy as two tonnes and one of them even came all the way from Mysuru,” said Anupam.
The immersion event which started around 10.30 am on October 5, went on till about 2 am on October 6, marking close to 18 hours of festivities. The Samaj is now working with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to get the area cleared so it can be ready for future celebrations.
