NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag expressed his disapproval of Shakib Al Hasan's batting approach during Bangladesh's chase of 197 runs against India in the T20 World Cup Super Eight match on Saturday. Bangladesh suffered a 50-run loss in the encounter.
India, who batted first, posted a formidable total of 196/5. Hardik Pandya played a blistering knock, scoring an unbeaten 50 off just 27 balls, which included four fours and three sixes.
Virat Kohli also contributed with a valuable 37 runs.
Bangladesh's response started on a positive note, but they lost their way in the middle overs, losing wickets at frequent intervals. Shakib, who scored 11 runs off seven balls, perished while attempting to hit Kuldeep Yadav for a boundary.
The Indian bowlers put on an impressive performance, with Kuldeep picking up three wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh claimed two scalps each.
Bangladesh could only manage 146/8 in their 20 overs, falling short of the target by 50 runs.
"When you have a set batter with you at the crease, at least support him. At least stay out in the middle and spend some time, try to get something out of the match. Instead, only 11 runs were scored off seven deliveries and then he walked back. So, I did not understand that," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
Sehwag suggested that Shakib ought to declare his retirement from the sport, thereby creating opportunities for the younger players in the team to step up and prove their mettle

"He has so much experience. So, is he not making the most of it or does he simply not care? or was he thinking that the target is too big and I just scored a six, and now I will score a six off every ball. That's why I said it the last time itself, he needs to make way for a younger player now," Sehwag added.
Bangladesh's chances of reaching the semifinals have become extremely slim after suffering two defeats in the Super Eight stage. Their last match will be against Afghanistan, scheduled for June 25.
