Apple, Meta partnership for putting Llama AI chatbot on iPhone may not happen, here’s why

Amidst the tech rivalry, Apple's strategic AI collaborations expand beyond Facebook, with potential integrations of advanced chatbots like Claude. The complex dynamics between Apple and Meta, influenced by privacy standards and revenue impacts, shape the evolving narrative of tech giants navigating AI advancements.
Apple, Meta partnership for putting Llama AI chatbot on iPhone may not happen, here’s why
Apple and Facebook have always had a stressed relationship, and it looks like Apple isn't ready to be friends with Facebook (opps, it’s Meta now) even after all these years. Though, it's not like they didn't try. Apple and Meta had a talk to see if the two could work together, but the way how the Zuckerberg and co. works didn’t sit well with Apple.
Wall Street Journal reported that Apple and Meta have been talking about using Meta’s Llama chatbot on iPhone (just the way Apple has integrated ChatGPT into iPhone).
Now, Bloomberg reports that the two are currently not in talks, but yes they did talk about having Llama on iPhone, back in March tell the sources. The conversation never professed to a formal stage.
Sources tell that Apple's decision to not onboard Meta was influenced by concerns over the company’s privacy practices, which Apple thinks are not stringent enough for its standards. People familiar with the discussion also told Bloomberg that Apple thinks partnering with Meta would not do much a good to its own image.
Heads up, Apple and Facebook were nice friends a long ago. Apple was integrating Facebook right into iPhones. But, in 2011 Apple told Zuckerberg that it can’t put its own apps within the Facebook app, and the two have been fighting since then.
The fight took an intense turn when Apple let people choose whether apps could track their activity, which put a big dent in Facebook's (basically Meta’s) revenue since it couldn’t track people to show them targeted ads. A part reason for Facebook’s infamous reputation.
Even though Apple showed off a couple of new nifty artificial intelligence tricks, it still doesn’t have a chatbot up it’s sleeve. So, it has partnered with OpenAI for that, integrating ChatGPT right into
Siri. And the iPhone-maker want more chatbots to be part of Apple Intelligence experience, since the company thinks people would want options.
While Apple has rejected Meta, it continues to talk with other companies. Talks are reportedly ongoing with AI startup Anthropic about potentially adding its Claude chatbot as an option in the future. Rumours have it that Apple is also in talks with Google, but a deal has not been finalised yet.
