Why tourists are banned from Italy's Capri
The mayor of Capri, Paolo Falco, has banned tourists disembarking on the Italian island as it faces water shortage due to issues with the water supply from the mainland.
Falco said that the situation on Capri had become "a real emergency," while there was still water on most of the island on Friday, local tanks were "running out". "The emergency would be worsened by the arrival of the thousands of tourists which arrive on Capri daily", said Falco.
According to the company responsible for providing water to Capri, a technical issue occurred on the mainland on Thursday.
Although the problem has since been resolved, the island continues to experience difficulties with its water supply.
The decision, effective immediately, resulted in several ferries from Naples and Sorrento being forced to return to their ports of origin.
To address the immediate needs of the local population, residents are permitted to collect up to 25 liters of drinking water per household from a designated supply tanker.
Capri, situated in the Bay of Naples, is renowned for its picturesque white villas, stunning cove-dotted coastline, and luxurious hotels. The island is home to approximately 13,000 permanent residents, but during the summer months, it typically experiences a significant influx of day-trippers.
