    Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) is the unlock for our clients on TikTok. By this point, most brands seem to see the “value” in TikTok. But, simultaneously, all too many brands light up the channel, see a sub 0.3 ROAS in Google Analytics and turn the channel off or keep it on a very low burn. What’s even more challenging? Most brands know this is a flawed way to evaluate the channel, but they have no other means to do so and, in the current environment, every dollar needs to be justified. This leads to two important points: 1. TikTok should not be evaluated as a pure “performance” channel – 94% of users delay visits to advertisers’ websites. 2. TikTok should not be measured by traditional attribution – 79% of purchases driven by TikTok are not captured through common attribution methods. Side note: There are a small handful of solutions like Rockerbox that empower brands with best-in-class MTA and insight into the full customer journey on TikTok through their exclusive TikTok integration. Nearly every MMM we’ve run tells a similar story for TikTok: Example 1 - Apparel Brand: TikTok had a true marginal ROAS of ~7.5x what we observed through Google Analytics MTA. ROAS for TikTok was ~2x that of Paid Search - granted at a much lower scale. Example 2 - Outdoor Brand: TikTok had a true marginal ROAS ~8.9x what we were reporting through Google Analytics MTA. ROAS for TikTok ~4x that of Brand Search, again at lower scale. We’re not alone in these findings. Research from WARC suggests that Google Analytics underreports TikTok contribution by over 22x! So does this mean we immediately 10x our clients’ investment in TikTok? No - but we structure scale tests that help us validate the accuracy of the modeled ROAS. From there, we continually test different thresholds of spend to determine the optimal (usually much higher) investment in TikTok. Topic for a future post: why we always run a full-funnel strategy on TikTok.

    My family and I are living life in Moab this week, which means we get to work remotely, kids go to camp and we get to explore this incredible area after work and on the weekends. I’m so grateful to work for a company that makes this possible and wanted to share this mostly as an idea for anyone out there that also has the flexibility with their work location. We have our typical breaks throughout the year where we get to unplug, relax and explore, but we also wanted to try something different and think outside the box. Our kids are going to learn some incredible things about this area, history and geology, things they likely wouldn’t if we were just on vacation. If anyone wants to learn more about our itinerary and this specific trip, DM me and I’m happy to share.
