American Popular Music

Stairway to Paradise reveals how American Jewish entrepreneurs, musicians, and performers influenced American popular music from the late nineteenth century till the mid-1960s. From blackface minstrelsy, ragtime, blues, jazz, and Broadway musicals, ending with folk and rock 'n' roll. The book follows the writers and artists' real and imaginative relationship with African-American culture's charisma. Stairway to Paradise discusses the artistic and occasionally ideological dialogue that these artists, writers, and entrepreneurs had with African-American artists and culture. Tracing Jewish immigration to the United States and the entry of Jews into the entertainment and cultural industry, the book allocates extensive space to the charged connection between music and politics as reflected in the Jewish-Black Alliance - both in the struggle for social justice and in the music field. It reveals Jewish success in the music industry and the unique and sometimes problematic relationships that characterized this process, as their dominance in this field became a source of blame for exploiting African-American artistic and human capital. Alongside this, the book shows how black-Jewish cooperation, and its fragile alliance, played a role in the hegemonic conflicts involving American culture during the 20th century. Unintentionally, it influenced the process of decline of the influence of the WASP elite during the 1960s. Stairway to Paradise fuses American history and musicology with cultural studies theories. This inter-disciplinary approach regarding race, class, and ethnicity offers an alternative view of more traditional notions regarding understanding American music's evolution.

My objective with this thesis is to investigate and document the extent to which Jamerson appropriated the skills he acquired in jazz and blues environments into a popular music context, arguably transforming the role of the bass guitar. Biographical information and excerpted transcriptions of his bass lines will inform my analysis of Jamerson’s musical style and evolution. The formal analysis with accompanying transcriptions will be drawn from his career at Motown Records, with mention of his session work for other labels, illustrating both the development of his style and explaining how his recorded output virtually created the model for contemporary electric bass guitar performance. Additionally, this thesis will expand the historical record on Jamerson while correcting errors, creating a selective, centralized and updated source list for the literature on Jamerson while expanding the amount of musical analysis of his specific bass lines and, with the analysis, solidifying the direct connection between Jamerson’s jazz experience and his eventual evolved music persona.

Both "Something Wild" (Jonathan Demme, 1986) and "Blue Velvet" (David Lynch, 1986) question contemporary conservative social agendas, but also subtly confirm traditional, paternalistic images of masculinity by using music to undermine their male protagonists’ ability to play conventional male heroes. Popular music in both films works to seduce the male protagonists into heady, disorienting relationships with women that inspire them to face unwonted danger and violence. Together, the films offer up an unsettling vision of male possibility, locating the capacity for masculine growth and achievement in a redefining, even transformative encounter with female desire and authority. They presuppose a certain innocence in their male protagonists that female musical performance or spectacle will educate by violent means, tapping the sensuousness and immediate emotional appeal of popular music to present male protagonists who acquire power and authority by submitting themselves to women.

W latach sześćdziesiątych na scenie muzycznej San Francisco wytworzyło się specyficzne zjawisko. Duża grupa artystów zaczęła tworzyć muzykę zbliżoną zarówno muzycznie, jak i tekstowo. Krytycy okrzyknęli ten trudny do dokładnego określenia twór mianem „San Francisco Sound”. Wtedy swoje kariery zaczynały niezwykle ważne i wpływowe w historii muzyki rozrywkowej zespoły, takie jak Santana, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane czy Big Brother & the Holding Company. To wszystko w czasie, kiedy właśnie w San Francisco zaczęła tworzyć się jedna z największych kontrkultur w historii.
Celem artykułu jest zdefiniowanie zjawiska San Francisco Sound, wyznaczenie jego cech charakterystycznych, wymienienie głównych przedstawicieli, krótka analiza ich twórczości oraz określenie wpływu, jakie wywarło ono na lokalną kulturę i kulturę całych Stanów Zjednoczonych. Istotnym aspektem niniejszego tekstu jest omówienie historii tego zjawiska, co pomoże w dalszej analizie. Przez to możliwe jest wskazanie korzeni nurtu, źródeł inspiracji, a także scharakteryzowanie lat działalności, najważniejszych wydarzeń z nim związanych, przyczyn szczytu popularności oraz zmierzchu. Innym istotnym elementem są relacje pomiędzy wspomnianym zjawiskiem a kontrkulturą lat 60. i ich wzajemne oddziaływanie, jak również wpływ San Francisco Sound na resztę amerykańskiej sceny muzycznej – zarówno ówczesnej, jak i współczesnej. Moim wywodem chcę udowodnić, że San Francisco Sound był bezpośrednio związany ze skupionym w San Francisco sercem kontrkultury lat 60. i że wzajemnie się one inspirowały. Chcę również wskazać, że duch tej muzyki nadal istnieje w świadomości współczesnych amerykańskich artystów, których twórczość bardzo często bezpośrednio nawiązuje do ówczesnych osiągnięć.

Filling a gap in existing scholarship, this essay explores philosopher Alan Watts’ engagements with Hindustani (North Indian classical) music by examining excerpts of Watts’ written work and considering the significance of his personal relationship with sarodist Ali Akbar Khan. Over the past half century, Hindustani music’s association with the counterculture of the 1960s has solidified in American cultural memory, so much so that the sitar and other Indian instruments are frequently deployed in popular culture as signifiers of psychedelic drug use and/or new age spirituality. Hindustani music and psychedelia have, however, shared a complex and somewhat fraught history. Despite the hippie counterculture’s affinity for Indian music and spirituality, sitarist Ravi Shankar repeatedly denounced his music’s public association with the use of psychedelic substances. He viewed Hindustani music as fundamentally incompatible with the drug culture surrounding his concerts and festival performances in the U.S. My essay examines the space between this negative association of psychedelic culture with Hindustani music and potentially meaningful engagements via Alan Watts. I situate Watts’ relationship with Ali Akbar Khan, and his appreciation for Hindustani music more broadly, as a resonant point of connection in the unforeseen pairing of Hindustani music and 1960s psychedelic culture.

Muzyka od zawsze obecna była w amerykańskiej polityce. Czy to podczas głośnych protestów, koncertów zespołów jawnie manifestujących swoje poglądy, czy festiwali, które skupiały setki tysięcy młodych ludzi niezadowolonych z obecnej sytuacji politycznej. Skoro więc muzyki jedna sobie tak ogromną rzeszę społeczeństwa, to zauważono w niej potencjał wyborczy. W XX, jak również i w XXI wieku byliśmy świadkami ciągłego wykorzystywania muzyki w prezydenckich kampaniach wyborczych. Kandydaci od Franklina Roosevelta, przez Nixona, Reagana, po Busha i Obamę – wszyscy odwoływali się do muzyki, próbując zyskać elektorat. Co ciekawe, artyści nie tylko protestowali przeciwko danemu politykowi, ale w dużej mierze wspierali i udostępniali swoje kompozycje na rzecz kampanii.
W mojej pracy przeglądam historię wykorzystywania muzyki w kampaniach wyborczych. Przez same jego początki w połowie XIX wieku, aż do ostatnich wyborów w 2012 roku, kiedy to Barack Obama i Mitt Romney przy wielu okazjach wykorzystywali poparcie artystów, jak i sami popisywali się swoimi wokalnymi umiejętnościami. Wskazuję na cele tego typu zachowania w historii, jak i współcześnie oraz ich formę, jak również przypisuję dane style muzyczne konkretnym kandydatom i analizuję jaki wpływ mają takie działania na ich wynik wyborczy.
