Bitwarden vs. 1Password: Which is better?

Bitwarden vs. 1Password review at a glance

Bitwarden is more compatible with a variety of operating systems and browsers. If you have many devices or want to cover a family with different devices, Bitwarden is a smart choice.

For users new to password managers, 1Password is more user-friendly and has better aesthetics. It also offers unlimited devices on every plan rather than making you purchase more licenses than you need.

Bitwarden starts at a lower price and offers a refund if requested within 30 days, but 1Password doesn’t have a money-back guarantee. When we read the terms and conditions for 1Password, however, we saw that the company will consider a refund on a case-by-case basis.

We like the individual plans for both of these providers, and each has a plan for families. Both of these are budget-friendly password managers that offer way more with paid tiers than with their free products, so for the best security, go with the paid plans.

Winner: Bitwarden. It’s less expensive and offers a refund within 30 days.

These two are evenly matched in terms of their main features, but Bitwarden’s password-sharing organizations are a little confusing, while 1Password’s policies are easier to understand.

Even if password sharing may not be your main criterion for choosing this kind of service, being able to send your mom the streaming password for the third time this week is more secure via your password manager than text.

We love the two-factor authentication (2FA), which both offer to help increase security. We’re also fans of the password strength reports offered by Bitwarden and 1Password.

Winner: 1Password. The password-sharing capabilities are easier to understand.

Which is safer, Bitwarden or 1Password?

When you trust software with personal information, you want to ensure it protects you from all angles. We check privacy policies, independent audits, and whether the software has been involved in data breaches or not. This way, you can choose a service knowing nothing is lurking, waiting to steal and share your data.

Most recent data breach Never Never

You may read some articles saying that 1Password was hacked, but that’s false. In October 2023, suspicious activity was detected on software that scanned potential employee applications. This had nothing to do with 1Password’s actual service.

Neither 1Password nor Bitwarden have ever suffered a security breach.

We love that both password managers go through independent third-party audits. We were impressed with how frequently 1Password is audited, and Bitwarden is still doing its due diligence and letting consumers know when its audits are performed.

Winner: Tie. They are equally as secure.

We were most disappointed in this section because of the lackluster customer service for both services. Although Bitwarden and 1Password are pretty compatible, there isn’t anyone live you can contact from either provider if you get stuck.

Bitwarden’s website has a submission form for questions, while 1Password gives you an email address after you sign up. In our testing, we were happier with Bitwarden’s offerings than with 1Password, but neither is great.

Winner: Bitwarden. It has more compatibility as well as more support options.
