Our shortlisted projects are Wild Duck Island demolition in the Contracts Under US$1 million category and Palm Beach to Tugun bridges demolition for the Civil category. SHORTLISTED | World Demolition Awards - PB2T Upgrade One of two DEMEX projects to be shortlisted for the @demolitionrecyclingint World Demolition Awards, the Palm Beach to Tugun bridges demolition project has been recognised in the Civil category. The project involved demolition of seven bridges in a five kilometre stretch of the Pacific Motorway upgrade project, with all works conducted to minimise disruption to road users. Works were staged at night in shifts, with the site cleaned and validated safe by an independent structural engineer by the commencement of morning traffic between 3.30am and 5.00am. We appreciate the efforts of all DEMEX employees and our delivery partners who were involved in securing and delivering this project for our valued client. AGING ASSETS | Asset owners can draw on experience Aging assets are frequently characterised by corrosion, deterioration and contamination. Dificulties also arise when original documentation may not be available to guide closure planning. Furthermore, the presence, location, and volume of hazardous materials may not be known. AGING ASSETS | Overcoming the challenges Aging infrastructure present significant challenges for asset owners. ⌘ Accurately calculating decommissioning and demolition costs are frequently underestimated during planning. The result is often unexpected cost and schedule overruns. ⌘ Meeting regulatory obligations and growing community expectations for environmental and sustainability performance can lead to unexpected costs. ⌘ While leaving aging assets in situ might be easier short term, in the long run this approach can result in high maintenance costs and reputational risks. PROJECT PROFILE | Mill decommissioning DEMEX was engaged as the principal contractor on this North Queensland industrial mill closure. Works included demolition of mill infrastructure - crushing house, tank farms, factory workshops and offices, molasses tank, clarification tanks, processing area and sugar storage shed. We also completed hazmat removal, coordinating the works of subcontractors onsite. Among the highlights for the project were: ➥ Induced collapse of the uncontaminated crystallisation tank ➥ Meeting business objectives around Indigenous employment and contractor engagement ➥ Meaningful engagement with the local community through the return of items of heritage value. DECOMMISSIONING | The value of collaboration Collaboration is key to successful decommissioning of aging assets, starting as early as the design phase. At every stage, involvement of a specialist demolition contractor can help asset owners to approach end of asset life with confidence. Planning: Early involvement, even at the design feasibility, means cost estimates can be calculated more accurately and adequate closure provisions made. Operations: During operations, developing a strategy for progressive closure can involve a demolition contractor who prepares detailed closure estimates, and periodically validates these estimates to account for cost changes. Decommissioning: During project delivery, internal project teams can engage early with a demolition specialist before commencing demolition, remediation, and civil works. A demolition specialist can also assist with identifying opportunities for the sale or salvage of equipment and scrap. Post Closure: Together with a demolition contractor, asset owners can capture learnings from closure and decommissioning activities by analysing past projects and devising solutions that improve outcomes on future projects. Our early involvement helps manage costs and risks, ensuring a smooth decommissioning process and strong client relationships.
