Call for military to prioritise citizen science and global climate action. Dr Adam Smith, Adjunct Professor at JCU is calling for the military to become more involved in environmental research and climate action through participation in citizen science projects. “While scientists face limitations in data collection due to constraints in time, funding, and manpower, the military possesses ample skills, resources and an increasing interest in environmental security,” said Dr Smith. Engagement in citizen science projects by defence entities offers both regional and personal advantages. These include enhanced community, scientific, and policy knowledge, as well as personal benefits such as improved health and well-being, heightened scientific literacy, and positive shifts in attitudes and behaviours, particularly regarding environmental stewardship and climate action. A co-author of the paper Admiral Piyal De Silva (Retd) said “Military possesses a greater strength that is achieved through tangible and intangible resource. There is a tremendous synergy for mitigation and response when civil capacities are combined with such might” Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/gq3rdYqu James Cook University Reef Ecologic #citizenscience #climateaction #military #globalaction #environmental #stewardship

On Saturday 7th September Jacinta attended the book launch of Iain McCalman’s latest book, ‘John Busst - Bohemian artist and saviour of reef and rainforest’. The event was held at Ninney Rise Historic House, the birthplace of reef and rainforest stewardship. At Reef Ecologic we are taking this opportunity to further connect with the important work of John Busst and continue the reef stewardship by replicating the 1967 Ellison Reef surveys, 60 years on. We aim to involve the community, scientists and Traditional Owners in this momentous event. Do you have some great ideas on a leadership course for North Queenslanders. Add you voice to Australian Rural Leadership Foundation discussions in person on Monday or online with this quiz. https://lnkd.in/gQ4d2JJT
Champion of science, sustainability and climate action. Global leader in marine strategic advice, research and capacity building. BCorp business. Individual ecological footprint of 1.9 planets
LEADERSHIP IN NORTH QUEENSLAND- help shape the future. We are all busy with our daily lives and work. The challenge is to prioritise where you can make the biggest difference (see 3 insightful quotes below). The Reef Ecologic team are prioritising attendance at an Australian Rural Leadership Foundation meeting on Monday from 1:30 to 3pm at the Mecure Hotel because these opportunities can change lives, communities and the world. We shared an invitation with 50 Townsville organisations and individuals who are involved in leadership and unfortunately many were not able to attend in person so I have attached a short four question quiz so they can have their input in co-design and collaboration. https://lnkd.in/gVuvv3rR PLEASE SHARE WITH A LOCAL LEADER "When everything is a priority, nothing is a priority." - Simon Fulleringer. "It's not enough to be busy. The question is, what are we busy about?" - Henry David Thoreau. "The key is not to prioritize what's on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities." - Stephen Covey

DAY 6- the final individual action is to 'Give time and money to things you care about' with Paul Hardisty. We support MOUA / Museum of Underwater Art, Australian Marine Conservation Society, Reef Check Australia, Great Barrier Reef Foundation, iNaturalist, Citizens of the Reef, Reef Restoration Foundation, Australian Citizen Science Association, MangroveWatch, Reef Life Survey, Australian Rural Leadership Foundation and many other NFPs and social enterprises that are helping with time and money through collaborations and projects because we care. Today I ask these organisations who they support and who supports them how to show the importance linkages of community, business and our planet.
