How does Ballotpedia...
...define candidacy?
...define incumbency?
...order candidate lists?
...choose battlegrounds?
...cover primaries?
...cover endorsements?
...cover campaign finance?
...cover polls?
...cover recall efforts?
...call an election?
...cover recounts?
...handle postponements?

This page outlines Ballotpedia's policy on which website and social media platform links appear on an officeholder or candidate's infobox.

The Ballotpedia profile page for each officeholder or candidate has an infobox at the top of the page. This infobox displays the person's name and political party affiliation at a minimum. It may also contain the person's photo, biographical information (education, military service, religion, profession), and political information (past or future election dates, time in office) if Ballotpedia has it.

Similarly, the bottom of the infobox may contain website and social media platform links that are relevant to the person in question. Depending on what websites or social media platforms the person has and if Ballotpedia has discovered them, the following links may appear:

  • Official website
  • Official Facebook
  • Official Twitter
  • Official Instagram
  • Official YouTube
  • Campaign website
  • Campaign Facebook
  • Campaign Twitter
  • Campaign Instagram
  • Campaign YouTube
  • Personal website
  • Personal Facebook
  • Personal Twitter
  • Personal Instagram
  • Personal YouTube
  • Personal LinkedIn

Officeholders and candidates may use more social media platforms than Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, or LinkedIn. However, due to spatial/design considerations, not all of these platforms can be included in this standard page feature. If a platform has not reached at least a 20% adoption rate with federal officeholders or candidates, it may be included in a section of the person's profile titled External links instead.
