Candidate Connection

Brandon Steele participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 9, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Brandon Steele's responses follow below.[3]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

" 1) Drugs- We must conquer the opioid epidemic.

2) Crime- We must stop the upward trend of violent crime.
3) Jobs- We must create an atmosphere that promotes job growth.[4][5]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

" The Criminal Justice system is an area that I feel very passionate about. I was a prosecuting attorney prior to resigning to run for the legislature. I observed many things being a prosecutor. Seeing the real life cost of the opioid epidemic, and the flood of property and violent crime the drug problem brings to the community brought me to a place where I decided I needed to step up and offer my expertise to help with the problem.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[5]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Brandon Steele answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

" I believe the most important characteristics of a public official is Honesty, Integrity, and Steadfastness. So often you see people that are well meaning get into public office and become corrupted by the system. We need leaders that will stand by their convictions.[5]
What legacy would you like to leave?
" My sole goal when elected to office is to turn the tide in our local war on drugs. Since 2006, our State has lost more people to drug overdose than the United States has lost troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. If I could accomplish only one thing it would be to stop the drug epidemic.[5]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
" I do believe it can be a benefit. Myself, it was seeing the legal system in action as a prosecutor that led to me deciding to run for the legislature. A lot of my ideas come from practical experience in applying the law on a daily basis.[5]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
" To alleviate the drug crisis, reverse the trend of rising instances of crime, addressing the needs of the foster care system in West Virginia, and creating sustainable job growth by administering a taxation system more like Tennessee.[5]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in West Virginia

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
