The August 26, 2014, general election in Escambia County featured three seats up for election. Incumbent Linda Moultrie faced a challenge from newcomers Laura Dortch Edler and Linda Moultrie in District 3. Fellow board members Jeff Bergosh and Gerald W. Boone ran for re-election without opposition in Districts 1 and 2, respectively.

The general election determined if candidates for each seat could garner a majority of the vote total. Because no candidate received 50 percent plus one of the general election votes in the District 3 race, the top two vote recipients, Moultrie and Nichols, advanced to the runoff election on November 4, 2014.

2014

Nichols provided the following answers to questions from the Pensacola News Journal:

" Describe the platform/mission statement of your campaign.

My platform is to work with the District Staff in developing policies that are researched-based that will provide innovative educational programs to enhance teacher effectiveness in the classroom and academic success for students. The mission is to become the conduit between the schools and the community. This can be achieved by communicating effectively with the community, schools and other stakeholders.

What are the top three issues in the community that could be directly impacted by your position?

a. Increasing the Graduation Rate

Research shows that communities with high graduation rates become a welcome door for businesses that are exploring relocation. As a result, businesses will help to strengthen the middle class thereby removing the possibility of the haves and have not.

b. Lobby for Mandatory Pre-Kindergarten

Fifteen to 20 percent of students entering kindergarten are not ready for school. Providing mandatory pre-kindergarten helps to level the academic playing field for students and will reduce the school to prison possibility.

c. Communication with the Constituency of District 3

I will host town hall meetings and provide other opportunities for the members of District 3 to communicate with their School Board Member.

Why should voters elect you on Nov. 4?

Voters should elect me because I have 30 years of experience in the field of education. My experience includes serving as a classroom teacher and an administrator. I have been involved with the opening and closings of schools and I have a clear understanding of a school culture, challenges and experiences that occur on a daily basis. I have spent over 20 years serving the community in two gubernatorial appointments and boards that addresses community issues.

What is the top challenge facing Northwest Florida? What is your solution to that challenge?

The biggest challenge facing Northwest Florida is the high dropout rate of students in Escambia County. The solution is to provide additional training for our teachers and to research best practices.

Specifically, what project would you like to see come from RESTORE money from the BP oil spill?

I will support any of the projects that will provide job opportunities for the Pensacola workforce and revitalize the community. The RESTORE money can provide educational opportunities and allow development of best practices in education.[3]
