Ballotpedia identified the November 5 general election as a battleground race. The summary below is from our coverage of this election, found here.

Andrew Kim (D), Curtis Bashaw (R), and four other candidates are running in New Jersey's U.S. Senate election on November 5, 2024.

The election will fill the Senate seat formerly held by Bob Menendez Sr. (D), who first took office in 2006. Menendez resigned on August 20, 2024, and withdrew from this race, following his indictment on federal corruption charges. Gov. Phil Murphy (D) appointed George Helmy (D) on September 9, 2024 to serve until the election results are certified.[2]

Kim represents New Jersey's 3rd Congressional District. He entered the race after Menendez's indictment and said, "This is not something I expected to do, but I believe New Jersey deserves better. We cannot jeopardize the Senate or compromise our country’s integrity."[3] Kim says he has made "ending corruption a pillar of my work and my campaign."[4] He is also focusing on affordability and lowering costs and says he wants to "find solutions for those working at family farms and mom-and-pop shops so that everyone...can succeed."[5]

Bashaw is a businessman who has worked in real estate and hospitality.[6] He says he won the Republican nomination because "People want political outsiders and businesspeople, and I think I fit that position the best."[7] Bashaw is campaigning on improving the economy and says, "We can’t just keep spending and expect to grow...We need to have fiscal discipline and not overspend, and that will help us grow back to prosperity."[8] Bashaw says he does not support a national abortion ban and that he "believe[s] these issues are best decided by a woman and her doctor, and not by the federal government."[9]

The Bergen Record's Charles Stile wrote both candidates "will try to convince voters that they are the credible torchbearer of change."[10] Kim is contrasting himself to Menendez and said in his primary victory speech that "New Jersey has a choice: the chaos and corruption of Bob Menendez and Donald Trump, or a politics that works for families struggling to get by."[11] Bashaw says his lack of political experience is an asset and said in an interview that New Jerseyans "want outsiders, business people, to go to Washington to get stuff done for them. They're tired of the D.C. insiders, the career politicians...There are winds of change in this state."[12]

According to the most recent fundraising numbers, Kim has raised $8.9 million and spent $5 million, and Bashaw has raised $2.6 million and spent $1.5 million. To read more about campaign finance reports, click here.

As of September 15, 2024, Decision Desk HQ rated the general election Likely Democratic, and The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter, Larry Sabato's Crystal Ball and The Hill, rated it Solid Democratic. Since 2000, Democrats have had an average margin of victory of about 12 points in New Jersey's U.S. Senate elections.

Christina Khalil (G), Kenneth Kaplan (L), Joanne Kuniansky (Socialist Workers Party), and Patricia Mooneyham (I) are also running for this seat.

The outcome of this race will affect the partisan balance of the U.S. Senate in 2025.

Thirty-four of 100 seats are up for election, including one special election. Of the seats up for election in 2024, Democrats hold 19, Republicans hold 11, and independents hold four. As of May 2024, eight members of the U.S. Senate had announced they were not running for re-election.

Campaign website

Curtis Bashaw’s campaign website stated the following:

"
  • Freedom

America is the greatest exception to tyranny in the history of humankind. Our great freedoms of speech, assembly, worship, conscious, enterprise, and self protection come with a price.

That price is that you may have to live next to somebody you may disagree with. The "Golden Rule" says to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If you do not want to be told what to do, then we should not tell our neighbor what to do.

I believe the same rule should apply to our government. Our government should not be able to tell us what to do in our lives!

  • Sicherheit

Domestic tranquility is a bedrock value enshrined in our nation's founding documents. However, today New Jerseyans and Americans are no longer feeling so safe and secure. Our wide-open southern border is a national security threat and a humanitarian crisis. Politicians also do not enforce the laws that are currently on our books.

I'm running for the United States Senate to ensure that New Jerseyans and Americans can once again feel safe and secure in their homes and communities.

  • Opportunity

Americans put up with tiresome, one size fits all rules and regulations from our government daily. It should be the responsibilty of the government to unshackle our small businesses.

I believe the best social program is a job. I'm running for the United States Senate to afford Americans the opportunity to work and thrive in our economy. Let's create new jobs and build the American opportunity our citizens crave for our children and grandchildren. [13]
