Dewey County is one of eight counties located within the South Dakota Fourth Judicial Circuit. The people of Dewey County are served by a circuit court and a magistrate court.

The United States District Court for the District of South Dakota has jurisdiction in Dewey County. Appeals from the District of South Dakota go to the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.[1]

Election rules

Primary election

If more than two candidates are running for a circuit court seat, they compete in the primary election. The two candidates who receive the most votes advance to the general election.[1]
