Two of the seven seats on the Hudson School District school board were up for general election on April 5, 2016. Incumbents Bruce Hanson and Jamie Johnson ran for re-election to their seats. They faced challenger Mary Yacoub for election to the board. Hanson and Johnson defeated Yacoub and won re-election to their seats.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Hudson School District Board of Education consists of seven at-large members elected to three-year terms. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on April 5, 2016. The board members elect a president, vice president, clerk and treasurer during an organizational meeting within 30 days of the fourth Monday in April.[2]
To be elected to the board, candidates must reside in the boundaries of the school district for 28 days prior to the filing of a "Declaration of Candidacy" form. Furthermore, at the time of taking office, each candidate must be a resident of the apportioned area he or she is elected to represent.[3] Candidates must also be 18 years old and citizens of the United States. Unless pardoned, those who have been convicted of a felony are not eligible for election to office in Wisconsin.[4]
Candidates had until January 5, 2016, to collect between 100 and 200 signatures for their nomination papers. The signatures had to come from residents of the district where the candidate sought election, but the petition circulators were not required to reside in the district or municipality. Circulators were required to be U.S. citizens and 18 years or older.[5]

Hanson and Johnson received official endorsements from the Wisconsin AFL-CIO.[8]
Campaign finance
No contributions or expenditures were reported during the election, according to the Hudson School District. Any candidate spending or receiving less than $2,000 was not required to file a campaign finance report.[9][10]

Referendum questions on the ballot in 2016
On April 5, 2016, voters in the Hudson School District voted on the school district's second referendum in three years to grant the district money to improve facilities in an effort to solve overcrowding issues. The 2014 ballot included two referendum questions that would have issued $108 million in debt. Both measures were rejected by 58 percent of voters.[11][12]
The 2016 ballot included three measures that, if approved, would issue $90.4 million in debt to the district. The first measure allowed for $8.2 million to build a high school multi-use athletic facility and renovations to the high school auditorium. The second measure gave the district $7.9 million for additions, renovations and upgrades to the middle school. The third measure gave the district $74.3 million for high school additions, renovations and upgrades. Six of the seven board members voted to put the referendum questions on the ballot. Board member Sandy Gehrke abstained from voting on the issue. All three measures passed. Question 1 passed with 57 percent of voters voting in favor of the referendum. Question 2 passed with 58 percent of the vote, and Question 3 passed with 53 percent in favor.[13][14][15]

The Hudson School District is located in St. Croix County in Wisconsin. The county seat is Hudson. St. Croix County was home to 86,759 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[16] The district was the 27th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 5,597 students.[17]

Higher education achievement
St. Croix County residents outperformed the state of Wisconsin in terms of higher education achievement from 2009-2013. The United States Census Bureau found that 33.0 percent of county residents aged 25 years or older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 26.8 percent for the state as a whole.[16]
Median household income
The median household income for St. Croix County between 2009 and 2013 was $68,426. During that same time period, the median household income for Wisconsin was $52,413, and it was $53,046 for the entire United States.[16][18]
Poverty rate
From 2009 to 2013, the poverty rate in St. Croix County was 7.6 percent, while it was 13.0 percent statewide.[16] During that same time period, the poverty rate for the country as a whole was 15.4 percent.[18]
