|I'm not your typical politician. I am a first responder, small business owner, CASA Volunteer, not quite left, not quite right, you'll find my political ideology is right down the middle. Led by our campaign’s Guiding Principles, we are running a different kind of campaign. A grassroots campaign that ordinary Hoosiers can relate to. I’ve taken a pledge to not take a dime of corporate PAC money, because I believe that as your representative, I will only be accountable to you, not to big corporate donors.
It’s time for a new generation of public service, a generation of citizen-leaders who believe that we can make our country a little better then we found it for our kids generation. When elected, at 35 years of age, I will be the youngest person in state history to represent Indiana House District 46. Learn more at www.kurtisforindiana.com
- Rooted in Hoosier values and hospitality, we are building a campaign that can compete and we’re doing it without accepting any contributions from corporate PACs. Corporate money does not belong in politics. We all deserve an equal voice in our government. Corporations and wealthy special interests have flooded the system with money and have bought the politicians, drowning out the voices of everyday Hoosiers.
- I'm definitely not a career politician. I grew up in a small rural farming community, moved to South-Central Indiana in 2006 and have been actively involved in our community ever since. As a candidate and when I'm elected to the Indiana General Assembly, my only responsibility is to the citizens of Indiana House District 46, not to corporate donors or special interest groups.
- I am fiscally conservative but socially liberal. Love is love, marijuana shouldn't be listed as a schedule 1 drug next to heroin and meth, and we should protect our Hoosier farmland and forests. I am a supporter of the 2nd amendment, have a lifetime CCW permit and have worked as a first responder my entire adult life.
Specifically I am very passionate about any type of public policy that affects those who serve our communities - from educators to first responders to small business operators. Our communities are supported by those who have sacrificed a little so that we all may gain a lot. As an adoptive parent, I am passionate about public policy surrounding adoption, foster care and supporting families in Indiana. Thanks to my time working in healthcare and emergency services, I am passionate about not only access to quality healthcare, but also affordable,. transparent healthcare that everyone can access. No one should go bankrupt due to a critical illness or injury and no one should have to be forced with deciding to pay for their medication or making their house payment.

Mutual respect, truth, personal and fiscal responsibility, and community involvement. Choosing to be involved in public service means actively being a member of the community that you serve and having an obligation to give back to that community as much as possible.
Unreachable, inactive and downright absent politicians are examples of poor leadership. I believe that our elected officials have a responsibility to their office and to the people that they serve.
I am committed to leaving a positive mark on our community. I actively work to make our community a better place to live by contributing my time, energy and information that in turn inspire others to be active citizens, to work to better our community.
We have a set of guiding principles on our campaign - It’s not about Republican or Democrat, it’s definitely not about corporate interests or big-money, this campaign is about us, everyday, hard working Hoosiers.
Our Guiding Principles talk about how we work together, how we relate to each other, to our community, to our opponents. These principles are at the core of everything we do; they drive our decision making, they help us with our planning, and they guide us in our daily work. Our principles include Mutual Respect, Truth, Personal and Fiscal Responsibility and Community Involvement
I just want to leave our world just a little better for my daughter and her children. As a servant leader, I hope that the work that I do helps someone else in our community, that the people that I come into contact with know that they can depend on me, that I have contributed positively in their life in some way.
The first historical event that happened in my lifetime that I remember would be President Clinton's scandal in 1998. I would have been 11 years old during the trial. After that, the terror attacks on September 11, 2001 would be the most vivid memory that I have. I was in high school.
My very first job was working in a funeral home after school. Odd, I know, but at the time I was pretty tech-savvy and managed their IT infrastructure and worked with databases, such as identifying and coding veterans in cemeteries throughout Indiana.
Leaders Eat Last - Simon Sinek -- it changed my perspective on leadership.
I have a four year old -- so right now, and probably for the next month or so, I'll have "Girl on Fire" made popular by Alicia Keys, but not the original version, I'm talking the one from the Sing 2 soundtrack stuck in my head.
Absolutely not. More than anything, state legislators should be elected for having a desire for public service and their ability to represent without being swayed by corporate campaign contributions or PACs. The complex problems that we face have to be handled head on by a leader who is not in the pocket of corporate interests. A politician can not make fair policy decisions if they are taking contributions from PACs or big corporate entities.

I personally experienced this last year. I was standing in line at a local pharmacy when the elderly couple in front of me was unable to pay for their prescriptions. They went as far as taking out a ziplock baggie of change to round up every last dollar they had. Four prescriptions in total, which I believe was around $250. With tears running down her face, she told the pharmacy technician to just put them back, that they would have to wait until their next check arrived. The medication was for a chronic illness, and without the medication, the illness would surely put them back in the hospital for emergency treatment. It's a story I've seen time and time again while working on the streets as a medic. Now we face inflation and the US Dollar is worth less than it did even two years ago, yet Hoosiers are trying to balance paying their mortgage or filling their medications. As the elderly couple walked away, I stopped them, swiped my credit card and paid for their prescriptions. We all need to learn to help one another, because if we all sacrifice a little, no one person should sacrifice a lot.
