Nicole López completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey in 2023. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by López's responses. Candidates are asked three required questions for this survey, but they may answer additional optional questions as well.

Expand all | Collapse all

Nicole López is running to represent her hometown district, CA-42, in Congress. At just 29 years old, Nicole is ready to bring the stories and experiences of her community to Capitol Hill to enact real change.

Nicole was born and raised in Southeast LA as the eldest daughter of an immigrant mother from Michoacán, México and a first generation Mexican-American father whose family has lived in the same SELA neighborhood for over 40 years. Needless to say, this congressional race is personal. Nicole is running to represent the community and family members that raised and inspired her from the start.

Nicole’s campaign platform is focused on workers’ rights to unionize, passing a Green New Deal, providing Medicare for All, canceling all student loan debt, and radically reforming our immigration system, which includes abolishing ICE.

Note: Ballotpedia reserves the right to edit Candidate Connection survey responses. Any edits made by Ballotpedia will be clearly marked with [brackets] for the public. Campaign website

López’s campaign website stated the following:

"

Medicare for All
Tens of millions of Americans are uninsured or underinsured, including thousands of families across the 42nd District. Healthcare is a fundamental human right, and the pandemic showed us that our patchworked private healthcare system is broken.

The United States must join the rest of the world in offering comprehensive health care for its citizens through Medicare for All. It’s the only way to ensure everyone can get the care they need, when they need it, without having to worry about a bill or bankruptcy.

Top Priorities

  • Guarantee health care for all, including vision, dental, hearing, and elder care.
  • Medicare for All would offer complete care for reproductive and gender-affirming care.
  • Under Medicare for All, prescription costs would be capped at $100.
  • Study after study shows that switching to a Medicare for All system would save us 2 trillion dollars compared to our current system.

Palestine
As of January 2024, over 26,000 Palestinians have been killed at the hands of the Israeli government and its military. There is no doubt that this "conflict" is a calculated attack on the lives of Palestinians. It is a genocide.

I support an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza. My stance is rooted in the principles of human rights, self-determination, and a firm commitment to peace.

Top Priorities

  • An immediate ceasefire and the initiation of peaceful negotiations that prioritize the safety and rights of civilians affected by Israel’s far-right government’s occupation and brutalization of Palestinians in Gaza and the Occupied Territories.
  • Substantial humanitarian aid to assist those affected by the conflict and support efforts towards rebuilding and reconciliation in the region.
  • No more U.S. tax dollars being sent to fund Israel's military.
  • I support the complete liberation of Palestine and it's people.

A Green New Deal
We can create thousands of green jobs and fight against the battery recycling corporations poisoning our community's land and water by enacting the Green New Deal.

Top Priorities

  • Sustainable industry and public solar and wind projects will not only help protect our communities from further environmental damage but also bring good, high-paying union jobs to every corner of our district.
  • From new buses and train cars to tracks and stations— investing in infrastructure will bring back transit jobs that have been disappearing for years, and the resulting networks will allow for more affordable and eco-friendly travel.
  • Retrofit buildings and businesses so that they are more eco-friendly and efficient. It’s a win-win plan that provides jobs for the construction industry, long-term financial savings for building owners, and an overall reduction in fossil fuel use.
  • Expand penalties for corporations who cause ecological and health disasters, including the battery recycling plants in our district.

Education
With the GOP increasingly using public education as a cultural wedge issue, demonizing teachers and our education systems, we must do everything we can to protect our public schools and make accessing education more equitable.

Top Priorities

  • Enact national universal Pre-K and early childhood development classes.
  • Adequately fund our public schools.
  • Tuition-Free College for All: including two, four, and trade school institutions.
  • Support continued efforts to cancel all student debt.
  • Federal minimum salary of $60,000 for school teachers.
  • Expand and strengthen Teachers’ unions.

Comprehensive Immigration Reform
Comprehensive immigration reform has failed on both sides of the aisle. We must provide a simple pathway to citizenship for immigrants.

Top Priorities

  • Abolishing ICE.
  • Closing detention centers and ending family separation.
  • Ensuring dignity and respect are top priorities at ports of entry.
  • Fully funding our immigration system so people are afforded due process in court, and the financial resources are available to clear the backlog of citizenship applications.

Support for the LGBTQIA2S+ Community
As a candidate, I am committed to advocating for the rights and well-being of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. There are several legislative measures in Congress that I would prioritize to ensure equal treatment and protection for all individuals.

Top Priorities:

  • Push for the passage of the Equality Act, which aims to prohibit discrimination in various areas such as employment, housing, education, and public accommodations.
  • Advocate for the implementation of the Student Non-Discrimination Act to protect LGBTQIA2S+ students from bullying and harassment in schools, and the Safe Schools Improvement Act to ensure that schools have policies in place to prevent and respond to such incidents.
  • Work towards passing legislation that promotes healthcare equality and access for LGBTQIA2S+ individuals, including culturally competent care and expanded medical services.

Protections for Renters and Affordable Housing
Nearly 85% of the residents of the 42nd District are renters. Los Angeles County is quickly becoming the most expensive counties in the United States to rent a property. We can and must do more to expand tenants' rights against the greed of developers and corporate landlords who continue to hike up rents and gentrify our neighborhoods, destroying generations of culture and community.

Top Priorities

  • Expand Tenant’s Right to Organize.
  • Expand anti-discrimination protections in housing, including prohibiting discrimination based on income source, sexual orientation, gender identity, or immigration status.
  • Expand and strengthen Eviction Protection Programs
  • Repeal the Faircloth Amendment and expand the growth of government-owned housing.

Support for Local Businesses and Street Vendors
In Los Angeles County, the heart and soul of our communities are often found in the local businesses and street vendors that bring vibrancy and economic vitality to our neighborhoods. I am deeply committed to nurturing these vital components of our district's economy. Our campaign is centered on creating an environment where local businesses and street vendors can thrive, rooted in equitable access to resources and a supportive framework that acknowledges their unique challenges and contributions.

Top Priorities

  • Advocating for easier access to low-interest loans and grants, particularly for local businesses in marginalized communities, ensuring they have the capital needed to grow and sustain their ventures.
  • Streamlining regulations for street vendors by simplifying permits and reducing bureaucratic barriers along with providing financial assistance for any fees.
  • Holding law enforcement accountable for intimidation and violence against street vendors.
  • Proposing tax incentives for small businesses, coupled with initiatives to provide affordable healthcare options for entrepreneurs and their employees, to ease the financial burdens they face.
  • Supporting community-led initiatives that amplify the success of local businesses and street vendors.

Workers’ Rights
Every person in our district deserves safety and security in the workplace. That means we must expand and strengthen workers' rights and make it easier for workers to join or form a union.

Top Priorities

  • Pass the PRO Act to provide comprehensive federal protections for workers.
  • Raise the Federal minimum wage to $20 an hour and tie it to inflation.
  • Create more federal job programs. We need a “new” New Deal for workers.[2]
