The following issues were listed on Graves' campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

"
  • Fiscal Discipline: I am proud to be one of the few Members of Congress who did not vote for any of the bailouts, government takeovers or stimulus bills passed by Congress.
  • Taxes: Currently, the U.S. tax code is 55,000 pages long. It’s over two million of credits, loop-holes and giveaways. It takes the average small business 37 hours to do their taxes. That’s time and money they should be able to spend growing the business.
  • Jobs: The federal government does not exist to create jobs. In fact, every new job it does “create” is paid for by American taxpayers. What Washington should be doing is cutting taxes and limiting harmful regulations. If that happens, businesses – especially small businesses – will once again begin to expand, hire and thrive.
  • National Defense: I have always been a vocal proponent for a strong national defense. Under our Constitution, the federal government’s top responsibility is to protect this nation from our enemies. While we certainly need to cut spending at the national level, it is wrong to make the Department of Defense bear the brunt of these cuts as we continue to fight a global War on Terrorism.
  • Agriculture: I’m proud to call myself a family farmer. Our family continues to operate our corn and soy farm in North Missouri, so I know first-hand how difficult it can be to make your living from the land. Yet, America’s farmers and agricultural sector are far and away the best in the world. Our bountiful harvests feed our countrymen and hundreds of millions around the world. Without our farmers, Americans from coast-to-coast would not enjoy the high standard of living we’ve come to expect in America.

Personal Gain Index

Congressional Personal Gain Index graphic.png
See also: Personal Gain Index (U.S. Congress)

The Personal Gain Index (U.S. Congress) is a two-part measurement that illustrates the extent to which members of the U.S. Congress have prospered during their tenure as public servants.
It consists of two different metrics:

PGI: Net Worth

See also: Changes in Net Worth of U.S. Senators and Representatives (Personal Gain Index) and Net worth of United States Senators and Representatives
Net Worth Metric graphic.png

Based on congressional financial disclosure forms and calculations made available by OpenSecrets.org, Graves' net worth as of 2012 was estimated between $1,232,010 and $5,895,998 . That averages to $3,564,004, which is lower than the average net worth of Republican representatives in 2012 of $7,614,097.96. Graves ranked as the 97th most wealthy representative in 2012.[179] Between 2004 and 2012, Graves' calculated net worth[180] increased by an average of 58 percent per year. Between 2004 and 2012, the average annual percentage increase for a member of Congress was 15.4 percent.[181]

2012$3,564,004

Comparatively, the American citizen experienced a median yearly decline in net worth of -0.94%.[183]

The data used to calculate changes in net worth may include changes resulting from assets gained through marriage, inheritance, changes in family estates and/or trusts, changes in family business ownership, and many other variables unrelated to a member's behavior in Congress.

PGI: Donation Concentration Metric

See also: The Donation Concentration Metric (U.S. Congress Personal Gain Index)

Filings required by the Federal Election Commission report on the industries that give to each candidate. Using campaign filings and information calculated by OpenSecrets.org, Ballotpedia calculated the percentage of donations by industry received by each incumbent over the course of his or her career (or 1989 and later, if elected prior to 1988). In the 113th Congress, Graves was the chair of the Small Business Committee. Graves received the most donations from individuals and PACs employed by the leadership PACs industry.

From 1999-2014, 21.65 percent of Graves' career contributions came from the top five industries as listed below.[184]
