One month ago I shared an important guidance on #mucositis published in one of the journals of The Lancet and put together by a #multidisciplinary group of international experts from The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) (https://lnkd.in/dcwfN6PE) Today I'm truly happy and honoured to share another insightful work that has just been published and which addresses the role of the #microbiome in the pathohenesis of #mucositis. Congratulations to my colleagues Andrea Stringer (University of South Australia) and Hannah Wardill (University of Adelaide) for sucessfully leading this project, which sheds light on the complex "causal basis for the microbiota’s involvement in mucositis", thus expanding the knowledge "needed to advance mucositis prevention and management while also continuing to advance the pathobiological model to reflect the modern understanding of this highly prevalent and burdensome complication of cancer therapy". Leading Lymphoedema Patient Advocate - South Australian of the Year 2022 Local Hero - Health Performance Council SA - PC4 CAG - FHMRI CAB - SA Health Lymphoedema Advisory Group - MASCC Lymphoedema Steering Committee
I had forgotten the importance of yesterday for me, the article in The Advertiser is coincidental. 🔹 On this day in 2009, just shy of my 37th birthday, I was diagnosed with an aggressive cancer. There was no family history of Breast Cancer so it was a shock - but as I was able to say in the article - getting the lump checked out quickly enabled me to get the treatment I needed straight away. And here I am today at 52 - a strong patient advocate for #lymphoedema and cancer survivorship. My Message today: 🔹 Please get to know what is normal for your breasts. If anything changes, don't be frightened to go for a check up. 🔹 If you are diagnosed with Breast Cancer - ask for a baseline measurement for #lymphoedema. It is best to get it done BEFORE your treatments begin. IF this is not possible or did not happen for whatever reason - ask for one at the earliest opportunity. 🔹 For BEST PRACTICE information on the management of BREAST CANCER TREATMENT RELATED LYMPHOEDEMA 👉 The Flinders University Lancet publication ‘The Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC): Clinical practice guidance for the prevention of breast cancer-related arm lymphoedema: international Delphi consensus-based recommendations of which I was a consumer patient advisor on - (scroll to bottom for the guidelines): 👉 https://lnkd.in/gJQb6CfB 💙 Thank you Ali Clarke for talking about this in the public domain - I send my heartfelt wishes of strength and resilience. #moniquelymph #patientcentredadvocacy #lymphoedemaawareness Breast Cancer Network Australia Cancer Council SA
